Local Democracy

Through the Local Democracy program, we carry out activities aimed at strengthening the principles of self-government and subsidiarity. We monitor the state of relations between the central government and local governments and propose changes that strengthen the autonomy of local communities; we also work to democratize the relationship between local officials and residents.

In cooperation with the Local Government Experts Group, we analyze the challenges related to the functioning of local governments in Poland and the division of responsibilities between the central administration and local authorities. We prepare proposals for changes aimed at improving the functioning of local governments, strengthening and expanding the powers of local government, and promoting its democratization.

Since 2022, we have been publishing the Local Self-Government Index, which illustrates the state of relations between the central government and local governments.

Through the nationwide “You Have a Voice” action, we have been supporting residents since 2006 in their efforts to improve their immediate surroundings and build cooperation with local government authorities. Every year, we invite civic organizations, informal groups, youth councils, schools, senior universities, and community news portals from across Poland, offering them assistance in undertaking initiatives that bring communities together to solve local problems and increase residents’ influence on decisions regarding the development of their towns. We carry out these activities in collaboration with partner organizations.
