Program for Tolerance

We aim to increase the number and scope of activities in Poland that more directly address all manifestations of racial, ethnic and religious intolerance and discrimination. We want to contribute to the development and increased professionalism of organizations conducting such activities.

In 2006 we ran a two-stage grant competition for interested in undertaking systematic and long-term efforts including:

  • monitoring and documenting the scale and instances of racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism in the media and publications, public administrative activities, education, propaganda of political parties and in other spheres of public as well as daily life (acts of verbal and physical aggression toward those of different appearance, origin or denomination)
  • dissemination of information regarding acts of intolerance, and mobilizing public opinion to react and protest against them
  • monitoring the situation of refugees and migrants and raising public awareness to their problems
  • undertaking interventions

Projects proposals might have involved research e.g. into causes and factors leading to the decrease/increase of xenophobic sentiments, the scale and impact of existing school textbooks, Holocaust awareness programs or, more broadly, education for tolerance programs and youth attitudes, as well as the dissemination of its findings and results. Applying organizations could have planned such research together with academic institutions and research centers.

Out of 33 letters of intent sent in the first stage of the competition we invited 8 organizations to prepare full proposals. Eventually, 4 of them received two years grants for projects they implement in 2007-2008.
