Discussion of experts on the results of Poland’s membership in Schengen area for Polish visa policy Discussion concerned changes to be introduced in current Polish visa policy towards Eastern Europe countries with Poland’s membership in Schengen area.

Representative of Polish Foreign Ministry confirmed that the citizens of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus will face following changes: longer waiting time for visa, submission of additional documents attached to visa application, evidence of financial means to stay in Poland (at least 25 EUR daily), increase in payments for visa (from 0 EUR to 35 EUR for Ukrainians, from 5 to 60 EUR for Belarusians). Representative of Office for Repatriation and Foreigners noted that in comparison with the current Polish visa system which is very liberal (1300–1400 visas issues in Lviv on a daily basis), Schengen system will bring a revolution. The only way to facilitate contacts with the countries to the East is to gradually abolish visas between Schengen countries and our eastern neighbors, especially that neither Russia nor Belarusia or Ukraine do not pose migration threat for EU. In his opinion, Poland should become an advocate of free visa movement betwen these countries and EU.
