Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) is becoming a region of increasing importance from the perspective of Poland and the European Union. This is primarily due to global security issues and interests of the international community in this area - one that borders Afghanistan and Iran. Another important reason is the significant reserves of energy resources Europe is interested in acquiring from the region. Since obtaining independence, the states of Central Asia have encountered numerous difficulties in transformation and democratization of their countries and are faced with the need to choose their own road for the future in terms of political, social and economic development as well as geopolitical alliances. The purpose of the project is to disseminate knowledge about Central Asia in Poland and support the development of civil society in states of this region. We would like to join the process of formulating Polish and European policies toward Central Asia by presenting the voice of Polish NGO community in the public discourse. As part of the project, we organize seminars and conferences as well as publish reports on the most important issues in EU-Central Asian relations and the internal situation of states in this region. In cooperation with partners from Central Asian states we carry out activities to strengthen civil society in this region. We would like to inspire new and support existing NGO initiatives through exchange of knowledge and experience, as well as the transfer of skills and good practices. Social Problems and Civil Society in Central AsiaIn May 2008 we organized a seminar aimed to discuss key social problems in Central Asia, especially socio-economic developments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Almost 60 participants took part in the seminar among who there were experts from Central Asia, Polish officials in charge of contacts with this region, officials responsible for the cooperation development programs, NGO representatives, and researchers from Poland and other Central European countries [więcej].
