Changes in Germany, Changes in Europe conference
Warsaw, October 5-6, 2006
Conference organized in cooperation with Konrad Adenauer Foundation
Last year elections in Poland and in Germany opened up significant opportunities as well as uncertainties with regard to the development of domestic and foreign policy in both countries. This uncertainty is additionally strengthened by the tentative direction of the development of the European Union. As a consequence both countries are confronted with the difficult task of redefining their foreign, European and domestic policies.
What is Germany in 2006, under the rule of new, great coalition? What Germany will come out of the current phase of development? Is it going to find the compromise between tradition of the social market economy and the demands of the global world? What are Germans perceptions of themselves, their past? What heritage they refer to in the 21st century? How do they manage in the era of cultural and ethnic pluralism? What kind of Europe they hope to build? What place in Europe they see for themselves, their neighbors and partners? How do they want to overcome the present crisis of the European Union? What do they think of the possibility of next enlargement? How do they see the perspective of Euro-Atlantic co-operation in face of the fundamental challenges of contemporary world: fight with terrorism and apocalyptic nihilism of radical Islam, furtherance of rule of law and democracy in the world, stabilization and development of regions neighboring Europe, using opportunities and safeguarding against destabilizing effects of globalization processes, ecological security problems.
These were the key issues the panelists - prominent Polish and German policymakers and scholars – discussed during three conference sessions: Germany’s approach to the world, Europe, and its neighbours, Internal developments in Germany and in the European Union, Germany’s identity and memory. The conference was attended by 170 participants: politicians, experts, scholars, journalists and government officials.
